Search Help

The following guidance will help to improve the accuracy of your searches:

Entering keywords

You can use very general keywords to browse the range of entries available, for example "history", "politics", "migration", "exhibitions", etc.

Alternatively, if you are looking for events about a famous person, historical event or specific theme then try to make your keywords as precise as possible. For example:

  • To find out information about famous political figures from Black and Asian British history use their names, such as "Equiano" or "Naoroji", rather than general terms like "campaigners", "politicians" or "politics"
  • "Gamelan", "reggae" or "bhangra" will retrieve more relevant results than just using "music", etc.

Capitalisation

Searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "Jamaica", "jamaica", and "JAMAICA" will all return the same results.

Word variations (Stemming)

Stemming of words is possible from the search page. For example, if you enter the term "education" you will also get "educational". Equally, entering the term "music" will also retrieve words such as "musical" and "musician" from the records. Try to be as specific as possible when using stemming.

Boolean operators (AND, OR and NOT)

You can combine words or phrases using the operators AND and OR. You can also use NOT before a word or phrase to exclude documents containing it. For example:

  • Black AND Asian
  • African OR Asian
  • Antislavery NOT Equiano

Once you have entered your search term(s), click the submit button to see if there are any events in the listing that match your keyword(s). All the details will be displayed on the Results of your search page.
